Tea Origin Stories: An Invitation
Good tea stories begin with a specific place and people who can explain it. We welcome proposals from tea makers, local cultural institutions and organisations representing tea-growing regions who want to help English-speaking audiences understand Chinese tea cultures.
Give a place a voice
A tea origin story can help an unfamiliar name become a place a reader understands. The aim is to connect a local tea tradition with the knowledge behind it: what happens there, why a making step matters, and how tea fits into everyday life. Specific observations and clear explanations give a story its character.
What a story could explore
- Place: a landscape, local name or tea tradition explained in its own context.
- Making: a process demonstrated by someone who practises it, with its purpose made clear to a first-time viewer.
- People: the experience and voices of those who grow, make, teach or drink the tea.
A clear proposal first
- Introduce the idea. Share the place, topic, relevant contacts and what could be shown or explained.
- Agree the scope. Discuss the audience, format, factual checks, image or filming permissions, credits, timing and any costs before work begins.
- Prepare the material. Confirm key names and terms, gather supporting information, and identify who can answer follow-up questions.
- Review for accuracy. Check factual details and agreed credits before a story is considered for publication.
Useful material to share
A short introduction is enough to start. Useful supporting material may include a process outline, local background references, interview availability, and photographs or short video clips with clear permission to use them. Explain what the material shows and who should be credited.
Begin a conversation
Possible formats include an article, a photo story or an English-language video. Each proposal would need an agreed scope before production or publication. Share the idea you would like an overseas reader to understand, together with a way to continue the conversation.
