Chinese Teapots & Teaware
You can start brewing Chinese loose leaf tea with one simple brewer. You do not need a full gongfu tea set.
Our first recommendation: a push-button tea infuser
For beginners who want an easy everyday routine, we strongly recommend a brewer with a removable infuser and a controlled tea-release mechanism—the style often called a piaoyi cup (飘逸杯) in Chinese. Search in English for a push-button tea infuser or easy tea brewer. Check the design: these names can describe different products.
Why start here?
- Steep and strain in one brewer, then pour into your usual cup.
- Release the brewed tea away from the leaves when the infusion is ready, making steeping time easier to manage.
- Reuse the leaves for another infusion when appropriate for the tea; you can adjust each steep separately.
A simple first brew
- Add loose leaf tea to the inner infuser. Follow the tea’s instructions for leaf quantity, water temperature and time.
- Add water within the brewer’s stated fill limit and let the tea steep.
- Operate the release mechanism as instructed to drain the infusion into the outer vessel, then pour into a cup.
- Empty and clean the infuser after use. Check whether the filter and valve can be removed for cleaning.
Before buying, check the inner brewing capacity—not just the outer jug capacity—plus heat suitability, handle comfort, drainage and cleaning access. Some designs need a separate drinking cup. Follow the specific model’s instructions; tea separation does not guarantee that every brew will be free of bitterness.

Chinese teapots
Compare capacity, lid fit, pouring control and cleaning access. Check the actual material and care instructions for each item.
Gaiwans
A gaiwan is a lidded brewing bowl. Look for a comfortable rim and lid grip; hot water and steam require care.
Tea cups and sharing pitchers
Choose cups that feel comfortable to hold. A sharing pitcher lets you divide a prepared infusion among several cups.
Gongfu tea tools
A tray, strainer and tea towel can make short, repeated infusions easier to manage. Start with what you will actually use.
How to choose your first set
- Start with how many people you serve and the amount you usually brew.
- Check the usable capacity, dimensions, material and cleaning instructions before buying.
- For any clay teapot, ask for specific material and origin information. A color or style name alone does not verify Yixing origin or handmade production.
- A matching set is optional: a brewing vessel and a cup are enough to begin.
