For a manageable tea break at work, use one brewer that separates the leaves from the drink, measure the water you actually add, and set a timer. A full gongfu set is optional. Start with the instructions for your particular tea rather than a universal office recipe.
Choose equipment around the space you have
Our first suggestion for a convenient everyday setup is a push-button tea infuser with a separate brewing chamber. Check the model’s drainage mechanism, usable inner capacity and cleaning instructions. If you already have a mug and a removable basket that fits it, that is another practical place to begin. You do not need to replace working equipment.
Before carrying anything to a desk, decide where you will fill it, drain the leaves and wash the parts. Keep the hot brewing area clear of electronics and paperwork. A small drip dish gives a removed basket somewhere to rest.
A short routine before the meeting starts
- Read the tea’s directions and measure the dry leaves with a clean, dry utensil.
- Choose the intended water volume, staying within the brewer’s fill limit.
- Use the temperature specified for the tea and start a timer when water meets the leaves.
- At the end, remove the basket or release the infusion as the brewer’s instructions describe.
- Let the tea reach a comfortable drinking temperature; clean the equipment after use.
What if you get interrupted?
A call can turn a timed steep into a much longer infusion. Before joining, separate the brewed tea from the leaves if you can do so safely. If you cannot attend to the brewer, wait until after the call to start. A timer is a reminder, not an automatic strainer.
If the cup is stronger than you enjoy, record the actual steeping time before changing the next brew. Use our bitterness guide for troubleshooting rather than assuming a different tea or expensive device is necessary.
When the shared kettle has only one setting
Boiling water is not the right starting point for every tea. UKTIA gives around 80°C / 176°F as general green tea guidance and advises following the pack. Cooling time varies with the vessel, water amount and room; a fixed waiting time does not confirm a temperature. Use suitable temperature control or a thermometer when the recipe requires it.
Common questions
Can I brew directly in a travel mug?
Only use a vessel designed for the purpose. Check whether you can separate the leaves and follow its filling, lid and hot-liquid instructions. An insulated mug does not stop the infusion while leaves remain in water.
Which tea should I bring?
Choose a clearly described tea whose preparation fits your break. Compare the current green tea and jasmine tea listings, and check the individual pack directions. This routine makes no promise about energy, concentration or health.
